Police shoot man suspected of double murder
Authorities say Hackensack police have shot a double murder suspect who lunged at officers with a knife.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office says 26-year-old Jose Ronald Santos-Alvarez stabbed a Hackensack officer in the hand Thursday night. Police then opened fire. Santos-Alvarez and the officer were taken to a hospital. The officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Santos-Alvarez's condition wasn't immediately known.
Santos-Alvarez was wanted on two counts of first degree murder in the deaths of his estranged girlfriend and their young son. Twenty-seven-year-old Monika Potoczniak and 4-year-old Christopher Potoczniak were found unconscious Oct. 7 in their Jersey City apartment.
They were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Authorities say Monika Potoczniak had been strangled and her son had been suffocated.
