NEWARK — Authorities say Newark police shot and killed a man who had wounded a teenager on a city street.

But they haven't said what sparked the shooting that occurred around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Spencer Street and Lindsley Avenue.

Essex County prosecutors say a preliminary investigation determined that 23-year-old Talif Scudder, of Irvington, shot a 16-year-old boy. Police soon responded and shot Scudder, who was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Authorities say officers were able to respond quickly to the scene because they were already in the area investigating an unrelated shooting on 18th Avenue that left a woman wounded.

The wounded teenager remained hospitalized Wednesday in critical but stable condition. His name has not been released.
