The Union County Prosecutor's Office says an officer on Sunday found 44-year-old John DelValle holding a 49-year-old woman at knifepoint on Union Avenue.

Authorities say during an altercation, the officer fired a single shot. DelValle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither the woman nor the 23-year veterans of the police department was injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
