The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office says Brick Police received a call just before 11 p.m. Sunday night from a male caller who said he was going to create a disturbance. The caller then hung up.

Police responding to the origin of the call, 47 Cherry Wood Circle, were met by a white man holding "what appeared to be a black semi-automatic handgun," the prosecutor's office said. The man did not comply with an order to drop the weapon and the officers shot at him several times, killing him, the office said.

Ocean County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Al Della Fave in a press release did not identify any of the officers or the man involved.

He also didn't clarify why the item was only described as "what appeared to be" a gun Contacted by New Jersey 101.5, Della Fave said the item had been recovered, but he couldn't speak to what it was any further.

Frank Flonigan, who said he has lived in the neighborhood he describes as "quiet"  for 23 years, heard a commotion and  "hysterical screaming" late on Sunday night. Another neighbor said the incident actually didn't surprise him as there have been "several incident" in recent years.

A resident also called it a "quiet community" where "everyone gets along" said it was "scary" to wake up to police cars parked up and down the street. She recalled a "drug ring" operating in the neighborhood about a year ago.  Another resident who came outside of her home Monday morning to fetch her morning newspaper to a heavy law enforcement presence said she lived in Jersey City and that "this is nothing."

Brick Township Police along with the Ocean County Sheriff's Department and Ocean County Prosecutor's Office are investigating.
