Charges are pending against a Newark man who authorities say stabbed a New Jersey Transit bus driver.

It's not clear what sparked the attack, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Newark. The bus was stopped in the 500 block of Hawthorne Avenue at the time, and the stabbing occurred as passengers were departing the bus.

Newark Police Detective Eugenio Gonzalez says one passenger, 26-year-old Maurice Young, had a knife and stabbed the driver several times. Witnesses alerted officers who were patrolling in the area at the time, and Young was arrested without incident.

The driver, whose name was not disclosed, was taken to University Hospital in Newark and remained there Sunday morning.

Further details were not disclosed, NJ Transit spokeswoman Penny Bassett Hackett referred all questions to Newark police.
