Authorities say a 74-year-old northern New Jersey man hit his live-in girlfriend in the head with a snow shovel and then falsely claimed she had cut him with a knife.

Englewood Police tell NJ.com that the couple was arguing when the attack occurred late Friday night. Their names were not disclosed, and authorities have not said what sparked the argument.

The 49-year-old woman was treated at a hospital and was later released.

When the woman called police to report the incident, the man allegedly cut himself with a knife and told her he would tell the responding officers that she had cut him. But the officers soon determined that the minor wounds he suffered were self-inflicted.
