Police: NJ Biker Taped Plate to Beat Tunnel Toll
Port Authority police say a New Jersey motorcyclist was caught trying to avoid paying a toll on the Jersey City side of the Holland Tunnel.
Police say 38-year-old Michael Mongalieri of South Amboy drove through an E-ZPass lane early Wednesday with a license plate obscured by strips of electrical tape.
The Port Authority needs a clear picture of plates so it can bill people who go through EZ-Pass lanes without transponders.
Mongalieri was charged with theft of service and tampering with a public record. Police didn't know if he had a lawyer.
Police say a tunnel manager noticed the taped-over plate and alerted nearby detectives in an unmarked vehicle.
