Police have identified the victim of a fatal, multi-vehicle crash involving an an out-of-control truck cab Saturday morning as a 24-year-old Elizabeth man.

According to the Union County Prosecutor's Office, Jeffrey Oakley died after the driver of a tractor trailer cab hit about a dozen cars and smashed through a police barricade in Elizabeth.

Danny Clyde Burnam, 57, who is also known as Danny Clyde Williams, was the driver of the truck, and faces multiple criminal charges, authorities said.

According to police, Burnam was driving the truck cab in the area of First Street and Elizabeth Avenue around midnight when he hit the first vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle tried to get him to stop, but Burnam then drove off erratically down Elizabeth Avenue, authorities said.

As Burnam approached the North Broad Street intersection, he was spotted by an off-duty Union County police officer who also tried to stop him by firing a single round from his service weapon, the Prosecutor's Office said.

As the suspect continued down North Broad Street, he hit several vehicles both parked and moving before crashing through an Elizabeth police barricade at Parker Road, police say. Two Elizabeth officers then fired their service weapons at Burnam striking him, but he continued driving, according to the Prosecutor's Office.

Burnam eventually collided head-on with Oakley's vehicle, killing him and injuring two other occupants in the vehicle, authorities said.

Burnam, who has addresses in Colorado and California, was charged with second-degree aggravated manslaughter, second-degree vehicular homicide, and second-degree reckless aggravated assault. He is being held on $2 million bail.
