Police ID Man Who Disappeared in Raritan Bay

Authorities have identified the body of a man who disappeared while swimming in the Raritan River.

A fisherman on a pier spotted the body on Thursday.

Perth Amboy police say 29-year-old Jorge Ortega Romero was caught up in underwater currents while wading with a 7-year-old girl on Wednesday night at a spot where the river empties into Raritan Bay.

Police say a 12-year-old boy entered the water to try and help. Both children were rescued by two teenagers and an auxiliary police unit that was patrolling the area. The children were treated and released from a hospital.

The incident happened on a beach near Sadowsky Parkway.
