Jose Saavedra told police that he was driving in Rutherford last Friday when he stopped to try to help a woman who appeared to be in an altercation with another man on the street. The man then allegedly stabbed Saavedra.

Now, police tell The Record that the 20-year-old East Rutherford resident admitted that he stabbed himself and that there was no couple on the street.

Saavedra is charged with false public alarms, false reports and a weapons offense.

It wasn't immediately known if he had retained an attorney.
