Newark Police Sgt. Ronald Glover said that one officer was taken into surgery Tuesday for a broken neck, while the other suffered neck and back injuries. Both are listed in stable condition.

The officers were responding during a police pursuit early Tuesday. Authorities say the pursuit ended when a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle wanted in connection with a robbery struck the officers.

Two Newark residents occupying the vehicle were taken into custody after the accident.

Driver Kenneth Cook faces seven charges, including eluding, aggravated assault on a police officer and heroin possession. Passenger Edward Cook is facing drug charges. It wasn't immediately known if the men had lawyers.
