A group of activists planned to demonstrate Tuesday against violence in a city where the single-year homicide record was just broken.

The group calling itself Stop the Trauma on People planned the protest after a member of the city council said that the crosses the group placed outside City Hall to remember the dead should be removed because they send a "negative image."

The protest was called off after Mayor Dana Redd and other officials said the crosses would not be touched.

There have been 58 homicides in the city so far this year, tying a city record set in 1995.
