Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto announced Wednesday that Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Chairman John Degnan agreed to table the proposal. Degnan wrote in a letter that any future service cuts would require detailed study and consultation with local officials.

The recommendation was one of many contained in a report last month by a panel commissioned by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

PATH carried about 73 million passengers in 2013, but operates at a deficit.
