Criminal sexual contact charges have been filed against a Plainfield police sergeant accused of assaulting a woman while he was on duty last summer.

Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow says 41-year-old Samuel Woody, a 12-year veteran of the force, was arrested Tuesday night in Plainfield. The city resident was later released after posting bail.

Investigators said Woody was on duty and in uniform when the alleged sexual contact occurred July 24. It was reported to authorities last month.

Romankow says Woody was suspended from the force following his arrest. It was not known if he had retained an attorney, and a telephone number for Woody could not be found Wednesday.
