But Judge George Boyd may still be able to stay on the bench as a municipal judge.

The court opinion published Wednesday bars Boyd from hearing any cases involving Perth Amboy police. The ruling says the matter represents a significant conflict of interest.

The Supreme Court says George Boyd can still preside over other court matters, but he and town officials will have to determine those standards.

Boyd's son, Ethan, became an active-duty Perth Amboy police officer in January 2011.

Three months later, a committee ruled George Boyd should resign from the bench despite his taking steps to avoid conflicts by disqualifying himself from his son's cases.
