Pennsylvania Governor Steps Down From DRPA Board

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett is stepping down as chairman of the board at the Delaware River Port Authority.

The Pennsylvania governor can always appoint a member to the authority’s board, which operates four Philadelphia-area bridges connecting New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

But instead of sending a representative, Corbett appointed himself to the board last year as controversies roared over a toll hike and the authority’s practice of spending toll revenue on economic development projects with little or nothing to do with transportation.

In a statement Wednesday, Corbett said he can step down now because he believes the board is now committed to the central mission of transportation.

Corbett has recommended that board member David Simon becomes chairman. And he’s appointing Andrew Reilly to a seat on the board.
