Pat DiNizio may be gone but his sauce, along with his music, will not be forgotten! The Smithereens lead singer who passed away Tuesday once came on my show and gave me his sauce recipe.

"You gotta cook the onion and garlic first in olive oil, throw in the onion then the garlic." Then Pat would buy what he felt was the best brand of kitchen ready crushed tomatoes called "Pastene." Now for the meat. "You get some beef, a big piece of pork that you quarter off the bone, meatballs, sausage and pepperoni" in the sauce and I cook it for like 5 hours."

This weekend, I'm thinking of making Pat's sauce in his memory, putting on "Especially For You" pouring a nice glass of wine and raising my glass to a true Jersey guy. Salute Pat!
