Two people are hospitalized following a serious overnight accident on the Garden State Parkway.

New Jersey State Police Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams told New Jersey 101.5 the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu lost control near Route 78 in Irvington on the southbound side and drove into a concrete jersey barrier, ejecting the passenger and trapping the driver.

The passenger and driver, both females, were taken to University Hospital in Newark where both were in serious condition, Williams said. The passenger required surgery for her injuries according to Williams, who declined to disclose their names.

The Parkway was closed for five hours while State Police conducted an investigation. All lanes were reopened around 7 a.m.
