According to the Asbury Park Press, the motion alleges the NJSIAA violated Anthony Starego’s civil rights by denying him a fifth year of eligibility.

The complaint filed in U.S. District court in Trenton claims Starego is entitled to play football this fall under the Federal Americans with Disability Act (ADA) because it calls for providing reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities in interscholastic competition.

In denying Starego’s waiver, the NJSIAA cited rules that they don’t allow student athletes to play the sport for more than four years or to compete after turning 19. Starego is now 19 and has completed his fourth season.

Starego made national news last fall when he kicked a game-winning field goal in the final seconds to give the Green Dragons a stunning upset of Toms River North.
