The Democrat has joined the chorus of critics saying Gov. Chris Christie was wrong to schedule the special election to complete the term of the late Frank Lautenberg for October.

The special election is scheduled 20 days before the general election. Pallone says it's costly and "simply outrageous." He's also applauding the group that's suing to try to move the election to Nov. 5, the same day as the general election. It's not clear when a ruling might come.

One Senate candidate has backed the governor's decision. Republican Steve Lonegan says it will allow voters to focus solely on national issues in the Senate race.
