Airstrikes and aid provide relief for Iraqi town under siege

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Aircraft from the United States, Australia, France and Britain dropped food and water to the beleaguered Iraqi town of Amirli, which has been under siege by Islamic State militants for nearly two months, the Pentagon said Saturday night. U.S. airstrikes supported the humanitarian mission.

US bombs militants in Iraq as crisis worsens

 

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) -- The U.S. unleashed its first airstrikes in northern Iraq against militants of the Islamic State group Friday amid a worsening humanitarian crisis. The extremists took captive hundreds of women from a religious minority, according to an Iraqi official, while thousands of other civilians fled in fear.

Iraqi leader: Islamic state is threat to region

BAGHDAD (AP) -- An extremist group's declaration of an Islamic state in territory it has seized in Iraq and Syria poses a threat to the entire region, Iraq's prime minister said Wednesday, warning that "no one in Iraq or any neighboring country will be safe from these plans."
