The New Jersey Conservation Foundation says about a dozen environmental and conservation groups filed "friend of the court" briefs on Monday in an appeal of a Superior Court judge's decision upholding a variance granted to LG Electronics to erect a 143-foot tower at its Englewood Cliffs location.

Elected officials from New Jersey and New York, including New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman have also filed legal papers opposing the proposed height.

Opponents say the structure will spoil the area's scenic beauty.

John Taylor, a spokesman for LG Electronics USA, says the project was approved after extensive public hearings and will generate jobs and a positive economic impact.
