There are knives, and then there are knives.

Jersey City police say James Forty, 37, had a boxcutter-style knife when he walked up to a man on West Side Avenue Tuesday and demanded his backpack, according to an NJ Advance Media report.

But the man who could have been the victims — a chef – told police instead pulled out a much larger work knife and stabbed Forty in the back in self-defense, according to the report.

Police arriving originally thought Forty was the victim, but found Amante's knife under a car and got Amante's account when they caught up with him a few blocks away, the report said. Forty, was treated at Jersey City Medical Center for treatment, and charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, the report says.
