HILLSBOROUGH — As police and first responders take part in an active shooter drill Friday, the township will also recognizes those in law enforcement who put their lives on the line.

The Hillsborough Municipal Complex will be closed and locked down until 1 p.m. for the exercise. More than 100 police, fire and rescue workers will participate, as well as employees  who work in the building.

"We did this a little over two years ago and we're doing it again this year. It helps the first responders and it helps out employees," township spokeswoman Pam Borek said.

“It is critical in these circumstances that our employees understand how the police and other first responders will respond in the event of an active shooter or other similar threat,” added Mayor Frank DelCore.

A thin blue line painted in front of the building on Veterans Way in the Somerset County township was also unveiled on Friday before the exercise started.

"This ‘Thin Blue Line’ will serve as a reminder to all residents and visitors to the Hillsborough Municipal Complex that our police officers, who are called to our aid, are a vital part of our community. It is a symbol of our appreciation and thanks to them for their service to our community,” DelCore said during Friday's ceremony.
