One Killed in Shopping Center Stabbing

One man is dead after a stabbing Monday morning at a Clifton shopping center.

PIX 11 reports a homeless man, Henry Werner, 61, with a knife approached two men, ages 67 and 81, walking together in the parking lot at the Richfield Shopping Center and stabbed the 67-year-old. The older man was stabbed when he tried to intervene before an off-duty Nutley police officer subdued Werner.

The 67-year-old man was taken to St. Joseph Hospital and later died. The 81-year-old man is in serious condition. Werner was arrested at the shopping center by Clifton police.

Werner was described as a regular at the shopping center. "He's been a fixture on the bench forever," Denis Roon told The Record.. "He was very respectful."
