One in Five Believe Boss Has Hurt Their Career, Survey Shows [AUDIO]

A new survey shows one in two employees are at least satisfied with their boss, but just one in five complain the boss has hurt their career.

The survey of 2,000 adults was done by Harris Interactive. Three in 10 in the survey said the boss had no impact on their job or career whatsoever.

Experts say the results make sense, since other research has shown that being happy with a boss directly influences job satisfaction.

The most common gripes, among those who reported a boss had hurt their career, were that their boss had slowed or held back pay raises and exposure to top management.

New Jersey career counselor Neil Cooper says it's incumbent upon management to continually grow with their underlings.

"Whether it's learning technical stuff about what they do or whether it's about building relationships or communications skills. Whatever it happens to be, that's part of being a good boss."

Cooper advises finding out about salary and benefits are important in a job interview, but you should also find out as much as you can about the boss.
