Twenty-three-year-old Quinton Brown of Hillside died at a hospital shortly after the shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

It's not yet known if Brown or his colleague, identified only as a 23-year-old Plainfield man, were targeted or if they were the victims of a random attack. Both men have worked at the Union County juvenile detention center since 2008.

The shootings occurred in an area not far from Newark's city hall and the Prudential Center. It comes just days after some concertgoers were attacked last week in an apparently unrelated series of violent assaults blamed on a roving band of teens.
