CLOSING CEREMONY

A jolly good show

LONDON (AP) — Goodbye, London. Hello, Rio. The Summer Olympics are over.
 

The Olympic flag has been handed from London to organizers of the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

London Mayor Boris Johnson handed the flag to IOC President Jacques Rogge (ROH'-guh), who then presented it to Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes.

Rio will be the first city in South America to host the Olympics.

The flag handover was one of the centerpiece moments of Sunday night's closing ceremony of the London Games.

It followed the march of athletes into the stadium and musical performances by acts ranging from the Spice Girls to George Michael to Annie Lennox.

FINAL MEDAL COUNT

U.S. finishes on top

LONDON (AP) — United States athletes concluded one of the best showings in Olympic history, winning the London Olympics medal title and the gold medal crown as well. American athletics won 46 gold medals, the most ever for an Olympics not held in the U.S. Overall, American athletes are taking home 104 total medals. China was next with 87.

BASKETBALL

U.S men repeat
 

LONDON (AP) — The U.S. men's basketball defended its Olympic gold medal, beating Spain 107-100 in the championship game.

Kevin Durant led all scorers with 30 points. LeBron James contributed 19 points and Kobe Bryant had 17.

Pau Gasol (POW guh-SAWL') scored 24 and Juan-Carlos Navarro had 21 for Spain, which had to settle for silver in the second straight Olympics.

Mike Krzyzewski (shuh-SHEF'-skee) says this is his final game as coach of Team USA, a position he's held since 2005. He led the 2008 team to gold in Beijing.

MEN'S MARATHON

Ugandan wins marathon

LONDON (AP) — Stephen Kiprotich (KIHP'-roh-tich) won the men's marathon on the final day of the London Olympics, giving Uganda its first medal of the London Games. He finished in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 1 second.

Kenya's Abel Kirui (AY'-buhl kih-ROO'-ee) finished 26 seconds behind Kiprotich. Countryman Wilson Kipsang led much of the race but faded late and held on for bronze just ahead of American Meb Keflezighi (keh-FLEHZH'-gee). Keflezighi was the silver medalist eight years ago in Athens.

It's only the third medal ever for Uganda in track and field and the first since 1996.

WRESTLING

Varner gets gold

LONDON (AP) — American Jake Varner won the gold medal in the men's 96-kilogram freestyle division.

The two-time NCAA champion beat Valerii Andriitsev (vuh-LAYR'-ee ahn-dray-EHT'-sehv) of Ukraine 1-0, 1-0 in the title showdown.

Varner is the second American wrestler to win Olympic gold in London. Jordan Burroughs won the men's 74-kg freestyle on Friday night.

It is the first time the U.S. has had multiple freestyle gold medalists since three Americans won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

WATER POLO

Another disappointing loss

LONDON (AP) — The U.S. men's water polo team finished eighth at the London Olympics, losing to Australia 10-9 Sunday.

The loss brings an end to a disappointing Olympic campaign for the Americans, who came into the London Games looking to improve upon their silver medal finish four years ago in Beijing.

The U.S. women won the silver medal on Saturday.
