Officials Trying to Get Handle on NJ Fuel Spill

Officials in New Jersey are trying to make sure they have contained a diesel fuel spill caused by Superstorm Sandy.

Coast Guard spokesman Russ Tipppets says it appears that crews have contained the spill that occurred at the height of the storm on Monday night at the Motiva oil tank facility in Woodbridge.

He says that fuel leaked from two tanks ruptured by the storm. Each tank had 336,000 gallons of fuel at the time. Tippets said officials hope to determine Thursday just how much leaked.

He said the fuel has been contained close to the spill on Woodbridge and Smiths Creeks. He says no fuel has been found on the New York side of the nearby Arthur Kill or in the navigable channel.
