If you're a Verizon customer in Ocean County right now, chances are that your cell phone is just a glorified door stop at the moment.

Our understanding, of course through contacts who can't be named because they're not authorized to speak to the media, is that Verizon is having equipment problems - specifically with a switch that controls multiple cell towers in the area.

It seems to be a localized problem - mostly confined to Toms River, Lakehurst, and the immediate surrounding areas. Once you start to travel north to Monmouth County or further south in Ocean County, your service should be back to normal.

We're told that Verizon is working on "rerouting the paths" to operational towers, but that will of course take some time and could result in slower than usual service due to the workaround. And of course an actual fix will take some time.

So that's the latest info that we have, we'll of course keep you updated.
