Ocean City Grapples With Dead Gull Mystery

Authorities in one New Jersey shore town are wondering why so many dead gulls are turning up along a new causeway.

Bill Hollingsworth of the Humane Society of Ocean City tells the Press of Atlantic City hat the group now regularly has to clean bird carcasses off the Route 52 causeway.

Officials say there have been more than 50 dead or injured birds along the bridge since the new causeway between Somers Point and Ocean City fully opened in mid-May.

That’s a lot more than on the old causeway, and more than at other causeway along the shore. Animal welfare officials are not sure why. One theory is that the wind current through that part of the Great Egg Harbor Bay sends birds veering into cars or onto the roadway.
