Obama: Signs Of Progress On Payroll Tax Cuts

President Barack Obama says he is seeing signs of progress from Congress as lawmakers debate extending a payroll tax cut due to expire at the end of the month.

But Obama warns that no compromise can be taken for granted and says nothing is final until his signature is on a bill.

Obama spoke a day after House Republican leaders offered to continue the payroll tax cut without demanding that its costs be offset by other budgetary cuts.

Some Democrats are reluctant to separate the payroll tax cut extension from the unemployment benefits and want them acted on at the same time.

Obama made his remarks this morning surrounded by individuals the White House says exemplify those who would benefit from the tax cut.
