Oops! Driver falsely ID’d himself … as wanted man, cops say

A man is facing several charges after he falsely identified himself to police, using the name of someone who was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Jonte D. Hill, 25, of Brooklyn, was pulled over on May 20, at 7:38 a.m. for allegedly driving 88 miles per hour in a 65-mile-per-hour zone on Interstate 80, according to NJ State Police.

Trooper Brian Leyton stopped Hill in Allamuchy for speeding while his 2015 Toyota Corolla. When asked for his driver's licence, police say, Hill was unable to provide documentation and instead gave the trooper a name and birth date, but authorities say neither actually belonged to him.

"Mr. Hill did not provide his real name. Instead, he used a different name and date of birth. Now, here’s where things go awry," State Police said in a statement on their Facebook page.

The trooper checked the name Hill provided and quickly learned that the individual whose information he gave had a suspended license as well as an active traffic warrant, police said.

"As a result, Mr. Hill was arrested for the outstanding warrant, and that’s when he decided that perhaps it was time to cough up his real name," police said. The irony is that Mr. Hill had no outstanding warrants. His license was suspended, but that won’t get you arrested here in Jersey."

Hill was arrested and charged with hindering police as well as providing false information. He was also issued summonses for alleged speeding, driving while suspended and failure to possess a valid driver's license.

According to authorities, had Hill provided the trooper with his real information when first asked, he would have avoided criminal charges and faced only traffic tickets and impount fees for his vehicle.

The Brooklyn man was released pending a future court date.
