Middlesex County prosecutors say 21 of the 25 people named in the 79-count indictment handed up Tuesday by a county grand jury are members and associates of the Bloods street gang. Overall, the defendants face charges including murder, aggravated assault, robbery and weapons offenses.

The indictment also alleges that money from illegal drug sales was used to help post bail and pay attorney fees for fellow gang members charged with other crimes.

The investigation began when a 40-year-old man was fatally shot in May 2012 as he sat inside his New Brunswick home. Authorities believe the slaying was the result of turf-wars between gangs.
