No racial bias at Kean University, in-house consultant finds
A consultant hired to examine possible racial bias at a New Jersey university has determined the school's policies and processes aren't discriminatory.
A coalition of black ministers had alleged discrimination at Kean University last fall.
The university said Tuesday consultant Michael Blackwell's report has been accepted by the governing body. Blackwell had been hired to review Kean's hiring and enrollment.
Blackwell's report determined the university's policies are "comprehensive and equitable."
It says nearly a fifth of Kean's students are African-American and roughly 30 percent of its employees are black.
Kean says a trustee who previously investigated federal civil rights complaints confirmed the findings. State Supreme Court Justice John Wallace is now expected to review the report.
Faculty union officials say the report would have more legitimacy if done independently.
