NJ’s most delicious ice cream shop? Foursquare’s got the scoop
July and August are the hottest and most humid months on New Jersey's calendar, meaning the app Foursquare released its America's Best Ice Cream Shops list at the perfect time.
The list features 51 shops from across the country, from "nostalgic ice cream parlors" to "cafes with funky flavors"— and one of the Garden State's own made the cut.
Coming in at number 32 on the list nationally is Hoffman's Ice Cream, a shop at Point Pleasant Beach that serves 38 ice cream flavors, as well as cakes and pies. The store opened as one of the state's first Carvel Ice Cream Stores in 1955, but made the switch to Hoffman's when the franchise expired in 1976.
Hoffman's has three other locations: Spring Lake Heights, Little Silver and Long Branch. All of their products are homemade from the Point Pleasant Beach location.
Too lazy to stand on line? Hoffman's allows customers of the Point Pleasant Beach location to text in their orders ahead of time, with pickup ready in about 15 minutes.
But let's say you're living in another state and craving some Hoffman's ice cream. You can request a shipment of your favorite pints to anywhere in the country. Talk about a craving.
The shop's unique flavors include Sea Salt Caramel Late, Pralines and Cream, Malt Ball, Key Lime Pie and Almond Turtles. Their menu touts some Garden State pride with a flavor called "Jersey Monkey."
Even Winter Storm Juno (the one that prompted Chris Christie to declare a state of emergency) couldn't keep customers away from Hoffman's ice cream.
And the sign outside of the shop is just as fun as the treats— it always seems to be spreading some ice cream-related wisdom.
But frankly, if Foursquare thinks that's the only ice cream shop in New Jersey worth a visit, it's got to have some serious brainfreeze.
Just a few months ago, our own Proud Jersey Girl Erin Vogt rounded up what she thought were New Jersey's top 11 ice cream shops (and maybe it's heresy, but Hoffman's didn't even make the cut).
Many of you were outraged your favorite shot missed the roundup. So Erin revisited the topic, and found a ton more — with your help (for what it's worth, Hoffman's made the cut that time).
