The state announced Friday that it would extend the deadline for applying for Homestead credits to Jan. 31. The original deadline was Dec. 31.

The Treasury Department says the change was made to help taxpayers cope with "the many distractions and commitments of the busy holiday season."

Senior citizens and disabled homeowners with incomes under $150,000 are eligible for the tax credit, as are other homeowners with incomes under $75,000.

The Homestead Benefit is based on home ownership during calendar year 2012. A New Jersey resident must have owned a principal residence on October 1, 2012, and paid property taxes on that home.
