NJ woman hurt when car runs down 7 at Delaware State

A South Jersey woman was among seven people hurt when a Mercedes-Benz drove through a picnic area on the campus of Delaware State University in Dover on Saturday night.

Dover Police said in a statement that Gregory Ligon, 28, of Mitchelville, Maryland parked his car and left the car in reverse when he got out, sending the car towards the picnic area where a fraternity event was taking place. Ligon got back in the car and tried to stop the vehicle but hit the gas instead of the brake pedal, propelling the sedan over a curb and across a grassy area, police said. The car  hit seven people before running into a tree and pinning a 21-year-old woman from Wilmington, Delaware against a tree.

The car's door then broke off, allowing it to keep going before hitting another tree. Police charged Ligon with driving under the influence, seven counts of vehicular assault and driving without proof of insurance.

An unnamed 20-year-old woman from Little Egg Harbor was hospitalized for a foot injury according to police.

The incident resulted in the school's Homecoming events being canceled.
