NJ Woman Gets 50-Year Sentence in Husband’s Death
A northern New Jersey mom convicted of aggravated manslaughter in the suffocation death of her ailing husband has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Jenny Tran had also been convicted last December of attempting to murder her daughter on separate occasions and threatening to kill her son. She also was convicted on child endangerment charges, but acquitted on murder charges.
Prosecutors said the 51-year-old Tran killed her husband at the family’s home in March 2009 because she saw him as a financial burden after he suffered a stroke.
But defense lawyers claimed she was psychotic at the time and didn’t know what she was doing, saying she was innocent by reason of insanity.
Family members cited those issues in court Thursday, asking the judge to impose a lenient sentence.
