Middlesex County prosecutors say a 19-year-old woman and her father have been indicted on charges stemming from an April hit-and-run accident at South Brunswick High School that seriously injured a 14-year-old girl.

Shivangi Patel is charged with assault by auto, endangering an injured victim and leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury. Her father, Rajesh Patel of South Brunswick, was charged with hindering his daughter's apprehension.

The indictment was handed up earlier this month by a county grand jury and made public Monday.

Authorities say Shivangi Patel, a Rutgers University student who was observing classes at the high school as part of her college studies, allegedly struck the teenager in a crosswalk in front of the school. The teen suffered a broken clavicle and a severe concussion.

Patel then allegedly drove home after the accident, and her father soon drove her back to the high school in another vehicle. Authorities say Rajesh Patel then tried to hide his daughter's car in the family driveway.

A phone number for the Patels rang unanswered Monday. It was not known if they have retained lawyers.
