NJ, Weather Addressed at Media Day [AUDIO]

Ever since New Jersey landed the job as co-host of Super Bowl XLVIII, folks in the Garden State have been concerned about the unpredictable weather and the amount of attention New Jersey would receive compared to New York. At Media Day in Newark on Tuesday, players and coaches sacked both topics.

“We’re kind of weatherproof,” said John Fox, head coach of the AFC Champion Denver Broncos. “We live in an area where we’ve had all the elements. We get paid to adjust.”

The Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium will be the first NFL Championship game played in a cold, open-air stadium. Current forecasts call for temperatures starting near 30 degrees at kickoff on Sunday, and gradually falling as the game develops; precipitation doesn’t seem likely.

“I don’t know if there is such a thing as an ideal temperature, but we’re ready to deal with anything,” Fox added.

“I think one good thing is we’re going to be able to practice in it all week,” said Peyton Manning, Denver’s star quarterback.

Both the Broncos and Seattle Seahawks have been lodged in Jersey City hotels since the weekend, and their practice fields are located in East Rutherford and Florham Park.

Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate pointed out that players get a lot of help on the sidelines during the game.

“We have heated benches, we have coats, we have hand warmers, we have heaters,” Tate said. “And you have adrenaline, so during the game it’s not even a big deal.”

Other players agreed that when a championship is on the line, the weather isn’t the primary focus.

“It’s the Super Bowl. It doesn’t matter what the weather is,” said Eric Decker, Broncos wide receiver. “We get an opportunity for a world championship.”

The game will be played in East Rutherford, but much of the promotion and media coverage has focused on New York, the other hosting state. Still, players managed to show New Jersey some love during their one-hour media sessions.

“New Jersey has been great, man. It’s been a nice city,” said Richard Sherman, cornerback for the Seahawks, while acknowledging fans in the Prudential Center crowd. “Thank you, New Jersey, for being awesome! You guys are amazing!”

“The pizza’s good,” added Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan. “I’ve been enjoying the food for sure.”

“It’s been cool to be able to wake up and see the Statue of Liberty right outside your window,” said Steven Johnson, backup Broncos linebacker.

Both head coaches spent a portion of their careers in the New Jersey/New York region and said it’s great to be back.
