It is called the, "Heart of a Hero" scholarship program. New Jersey First Lady Mary Pat Christie says Jersey residents who have served their country, hold a high school diploma and submit a letter stating their goals and how the scholarship will be used, while enrolled at an accredited college or vocational school and are active as a community volunteer are eligible.

"Veterans that are in their communities, that are doing volunteer efforts in some way or another . It's pretty remarkable how active these folks are in their communities."

They will award 10 scholarships of $5,000 each this year, largely with the help of a $50,000 donation from Walmart.

Service members interested in applying for the "Heart of a Hero" scholarship must fully complete the application form either online at the New Jersey Heroes website by no later than 5pm on July 26th, or submit an application through the mail postmarked no later than July 26th.

It can be mailed to NJ Heroes, P.O. Box 95, Mendham, New Jersey 07945-0095.
