NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder identified the victim of Wednesday's accident as 70-year-old Gerard Vankollenburgen of Montvale.

Investigators say he appeared to have crawled under a crossing gate as the train approached and put his back to the train. The incident occurred just after noon Wednesday in Montvale.

The engineer sounded the train's horn, but could not stop in time.

Witnesses said the man did not appear to be trying to move out of the train's path.

None of the 20 passengers aboard the train bound for Spring Valley, N.Y. were injured in the accident.

The incident remains under investigation.
