NJ Transit fare hike proposal likely by end of month

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey Transit's top official says a proposal to raise fares to close a budget gap is expected some time by the end of April.

NJ Transit Executive Director Veronique Hakim said after a Senate Budget Committee hearing on Thursday the agency is aiming to make the increase significantly lower than the 22-percent hike in 2010.

Any proposal would first have to undergo a public hearing process.

Her comments came on the same day Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox said the transportation trust fund will be broke next year unless lawmakers and the governor agree on a way to fund it.
