According to the New Jersey chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) survey, small business owners are very skeptical about the future.  The optimism index was down in September, even before Washington's current impasse over the budget began.

What will happen if optimism continues to wane? "Some of them are not giving employee raises, but another alternative is to actually get rid of employees," said Laurie Ehlbeck, director of NFIB.

Meanwhile, 20 percent of NFIB members still report having job openings they can't fill.
