The state recently adopted new federal flood maps issued after Superstorm Sandy that showed far more homes need to be elevated than previously believed. The maps also call for greater heights for many homes that need to go up.

Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez, both Democrats, wrote a letter to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development calling for use of Sandy relief money to pay for the elevations.

Residents who have federal flood insurance are eligible for $30,000 toward meeting the new regulatory requirements.
