The Democratic senators from New Jersey have sent a letter to President Barack Obama requesting the extension of grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The FEMA funds are currently due to expire on April 30.

The letter says while the majority of participants have since moved into permanent housing, there are still thousands of homeowners in limbo waiting for grants to rebuild.

The senators say many Sandy victims still lack a permanent home to return to and remain “heavily reliant on the temporary housing assistance that they currently receive.”

The letter says 933 out of 37,000 New Jersey applicants are still receiving rental assistance.
