NJ Secures Millions For Transportation

Today, the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded New Jersey $7.5 million in transportation funding. The Garden State’s two U.S. Senators are praising the announcement.

“This is welcome news for New Jersey’s commuters and for our local economy,” says Senator Bob Menendez, Chairman of the Senate subcommittee that oversees public transportation. “This funding will help guarantee New Jerseyans can rely on a modern transportation system that gets them to their destination safely and on time, while helping protect local jobs in the transit sector.”

$3.5 million will go toward the improvement of bus services and facilities at the Ridgewood and Westmont stations. The funding for Ridgewood will help the station become more accessible for those with disabilities; the funding for Westmont is for the construction of a new station.

$4 million will be spent to support the ongoing efforts of the National Transit Institute. NTI provides training, education, and clearinghouse services in support of public transportation and quality of life for the entire nation.

Senator Frank Lautenberg says, “Transportation projects improve our region's economy, create jobs, and keep New Jersey moving. These federal grants will help make transit service accessible to more New Jerseyans and ensure that Rutgers’ National Transit Institute can continue to provide critical training and best management practices for transit operators across the country."
