NJ River Line Crashes Into Car, Killing Driver
A train from New Jersey Transit's River Line collided with a car in Trenton, killing the driver and injuring his passenger.
Courtney Carroll, a spokeswoman for NJ Transit tells The Times of Trenton that the car crossed driven by Herman English, 61, of Hamilton drove into the path of the train against warning signals in the area of the platform on Cass Street. around 6 p.m in the driving snow and ice.The train slammed into the driver's side of the car and dragged it 200 feet onto another track.
The crossing gates were in the down position at the time of the impact,” Carroll told the Times.
Firefighters working a fire nearby were able to quickly respond and pull the passenger out of the car, a Mercedes, using the jaws of life.The unidentified woman remains hospitalized on Sunday morning.
There were no injuries reported among the 28 passengers aboard the train; they were taken to alternate transportation to continue their trip.
The crash caused service on the light rail line to be suspended between Cass Street in Trenton and Bordentown and closed Route 129 for a time.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
