A congressman from northern New Jersey is recovering at his home after undergoing gallbladder surgery.

A spokeswoman for Rep. Albio Sires says the 62-year-old left the hospital after surgery Thursday. He was hospitalized on Saturday.

The spokeswoman says the Democrat is looking forward to resuming his normal work schedule Monday.

The fourth-term congressman represents the 8th district, which includes Jersey City and Elizabeth.

Sires previously served two terms as speaker of the state Assembly. He was also the mayor of West New York from 1995 to 2006.

The spokeswoman says Sires is doing fine and is resting at his home in West New York.
